Werfen: Destination close to Saalfelden
Eisriesenwelt and medieval castle
Werfen is about 45 minutes away by car from Hotel Ritzenhof and a popular destination. You can choose for yourself what to discover in this ancient place. The castle can be reached on foot or with the cog railroad. The former weir plant is one of the few medieval castles in Austria. During a guided tour you visit the chapel, the resin kitchen, the armory and the weir itself. Also the bell tower with the Fürstenzimmer and the exhibition of the castle’s history are instructive and fascinating. Also worth to see is the raptor show – a checkpoint of every tour.
The eternal ice: Eisriesenwelt Werfen
The impressive Eisriesenwelt is open to the public from May to October. The cave is a labyrinth with a total length of 40 kilometer. The entrance is located at an altitude of 1,642 meters above sea level. Starting at the visitor’s center you can reach the caves on foot or with the cable car.
Don’t forget to wear solid boots and a warm jacket! The temperature inside the cave is about 0 degrees and can only be entered with trained guides.
